Abstract

The article aims to review the comparative methods in the study of religion by highlighting its fundamental role for the academic mission of religious studies and by proposing a theoretical approach. Islam as a religion and Muslims as a community has come into contact with other religions from the very beginning of this movement. Throughout the history there had been several Muslim scholars and leaders who wrote valuable writings on the creeds, beliefs, practices, and history of other religions. Islamic religious literature provided the foundations for this study. Western scholars claims that they are the real initiator of the study of comparative religions. They claim that they introduced principles for a neutral and just study of the religions. The two ways: Islamic traditional and modern western, used in the study of religion, are analyzed as this analysis is integral for religious studies as an academic discipline. The article incorporates insights gained from various approaches by Islamic & western scholars that is based upon thorough analysis of comparison. It seeks to enrich the considerations of both the methodologies and encourages scholars to produce responsible comparative studies.
