Abstract

Female infanticide in Pre-Prophetic Epoch (Analysis of opinions about its Causes and motives) Before the rise of Islam, it was a cruel custom among pagan Arabs to bury their newborn daughters alive. Historically, it is claimed that the person who started this abuse, was named Qays bin Asim al-Tamimi who was in battle with an opponent tribe and his daughter was captured. According to the prevalent laws of war, she got married with a worrier of that conqueror tribe. Some years later when a peace treaty was made with that tribe Qays wanted her daughter to be returned back but instead she chose to stay with her husband. After this happening, Qays made an oath that if he ever had another daughter he would bury her alive. There were two established ways to commit the crime of wa’d. To either make the wife deliver the baby into a pit in the ground, if it was a boy take him out and if it was a girl to cover it up with soil. The second was to wait till the girl reached the age of six, allowing the mother to spend some time with her. Then the father would take the girl to the dessert to a grave he had already dug. As she looked into it to see what was down there, he would put her in and fill in the hole. There are different opinions about the causes and motives of this practice. It has been tried in the article to come with preferred opinion.
